Founded in 1932 by Traverse City native John Clancy, Shady Trails camp is nestled on twenty seven beautiful, wooded acres on Grand Traverse Bay between the villages of Omena and Northport. For most of its existence Shady Trails was a speech therapy camp for boys and girls. Over the years, many hundreds of campers spent their summers at Shady Trails learning to cope with their speech problems.
Shady Trails is a day camp for children between the ages of five and fourteen years old. During the month of July, we offer a full range of camp activities and programs that are designed to provide learning experiences and recreational activities in a natural setting where children can explore their values, social relationships, and their approaches to learning in a safe, non-judgmental, nurturing community.
Campers are assigned to cabins based on age. Two or more counselors lead each cabin group, ensuring the well-being of each camper and keeping the fun level high! Shady Trails campers and counselors work together to design individual camp programs by choosing from a wide variety of activities.
Activities include soccer, tennis, basketball, and other field sports, disc golf, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, art, nature, crafts, rope course, archery, creative writing & reading, dance and performing arts, music, cooking, and fitness. Expert staff members and supportive counselors help campers to achieve their personal best. Delicious midday meals, including a great salad bar, are enjoyed family style in our beautiful main lodge dining hall. Campers share responsibility for table preparation, serving and clearing, while having fun and singing traditional camp songs.
